Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, 3rd Ave Ext, Rensselaer, NY 12144
On August 1, 1860, Father Corry, founder and first pastor of St. John the Evangelist Church, purchased the first ten acres of land for a parish cemetery. It was laid out in small lots, and its first interment took place on September 5, 1860. In 1869, another ten acre field was purchased, and in 1922 twenty more acres of land were purchased and a new road was constructed for its entrance. In 2005 the first above-ground crypt was erected in a new section for mausoleums.
In 1924, after the establishment of the Church of St. Joseph (1915) and the Church of the Holy Spirit (1922), it was decided to change the name of St. John’s Cemetery to Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, welcoming other parishes to bury their dead there.
